Yolande Cornelia â€Å"Nikki† Giovanni Jr is an well-known African-American poet, writer, commentator, activist, and educator. Today we will look at â€Å"A poem for Langston Hughes† from her collection and do a literary analysis on it. The author took the time to adopt a certain sound throughout her work. You can shape sound within a poem through accent, alliteration, assonance, consonance, internal rhyme, meter, onomatopoeia, rhyme and rhythm. She uses a combination of these sound devices used in poetry. Punctuation and form of the poem sets the timing to add emphasis or make the audience pay closer attention. Other things derive from sound such as the overall feeling. Punctuation can either speed up or slow down what you are saying. It can even form how you say it. If you look at the sixth couplet of â€Å"A poem for Langston Hughes† you will see what I am talking about. â€Å"meter...verse†¦classical†¦Free† . This obviously makes you slow down and really pay attention to what was is being said. It also gives you a sound to compare each individual part to the next. In accordance with this, sound can add emphasis through form. In â€Å"A poem for Langston Hughes† you can see when you look at the whole poem you see what I am talking about. The form of â€Å"a poem for Langston Hughes† is verse chorus, verse, chorus, and then chorus. This obvious adds emphasis because it does not say it goes this way we can just see the form through the way it is set up and the rhythm. It also adds emphasis because when we think of the way it is set up, it is a song which adds a certain rhythm to saying it. The form of a song also makes the information being presented easier to remember and comprehend. In accordance with this, the a uthor can use punctuation to establish a more meaningful sound.
